This Race weekend was from the revised racepoint of Laceby due to the weather forecasted at Whitby, unfortunately along the way to it’s destination the Saxon Valley transporter started to have issues.
Whilst the transporter was travelling through Boston on route to it’s destination, at roughly 11:45pm the vehicle lost power & the engine management warning light came on, fortunately James Boyd our Convoyer was able to safely pull off onto a quiet layby.
The SVCC has access to a National breakdown service and they were called out.
Unfortunately, they were unable to help & the prospect of a recovery to Ipswich was the only answer.
The SVCC have a contingency plan in case of an emergency such as this.
We have a Geraldy Trailer the same size as the transporter body.
With the use of James’ van, Kris Mulley & Jacob Boyd set of to recover the birds.
Meanwhile at the transporter James managed to get water on for the birds so they could rest until the backup arrived.
On the journey up to Boston, Kris contacted a pigeon colleague in Boston( James Messenger ) and informed him of our predicament.
With the help of his club mates from the Boston Central RPC they transferred the crates to the trailer when Kris & Jacob arrived.
James Messenger also contacted Mervyn Greatrix who maintains the Peterborough & District Federation Transporter.
With the crates transferred and extra water, the three of them travelled to Sleaford which was the closes RPRA racepoint.
Fortunately, the transporter was able to start and was taken to Mervyn’s workshop where it is currently sat.
The 866 birds were eventually released at 1pm
A big thankyou from the SVCC goes to everyone involved with the transportation of the birds to Sleaford to enable this weekends race to take place, Especially members of the Boston Central RPC.
Next weekends race will be convoyed in the Geraldy trailer unless Mervyn is able to repair the transporter before Friday.
